Parameters

Track Setup

  • Track requirements consist of a smooth, flat surface that is clean and safe to skate on.
  • The track must be oval in shape (mimicking the old style bank tracks), preferably the offset speed oval design.
  • All boundary lines must be clearly marked with an additional ref lane around the outside (ref lane size to venue), starting line and jammer start line, which is 10 feet back from the pack start line.
  • The inside oval is restricted to officials, with the exemption of captains, co-captains, and designated team managers in order to communicate with refs. Other skaters may be penalized for this.

The tool for your track set up begins with one length of rope a total of 36' long with a tape marker for the mid point, one 27' length, and one 14' length. At each end of the 36' piece you will attach a home made triangle (any rope, PVC and strong tape work just fine). To build the first triangle: Two sides of this triangle will be 1' in length; take one piece and your 36' rope, run one end of the rope through the piece of 1' PVC, use the last 6in of the rope to tie a knot, set aside. Now take the second piece of 1' PVC and your 27' rope, run it through using the last 6in to tie a knot, take the same piece of PVC and your 14' rope and run it through the opposite direction, again using the last 6in to tie a knot in the end. Attach the 1' pieces of PVC at a 90 degree angle where the knot from the 36' piece and the knot from the 14' piece meet; if done correctly there should be a piece of rope extending from each opening (all different lengths). To complete the triangle cut your third piece of PVC 1'5" long, and attach at open corners (tucking in knots as you tape). Repeat process at other end of 36' rope to create second triangle.

When completed lay triangles out with the long sides pointed left from the point of view of the center of the track. The bottom corner of the triangle should sit at a 90 degree angle while one person secures it by holding or standing on it. Track set up can be done very fast with 10 people: one on each triangle; two on each short rope (one to pull tape one to flatten); and two on each long rope. You pull the rope out straight across (horizontally with the bottom of the triangle) and, holding the tape while keeping the length of rope taut, walk the entire half circle letting out tape while the other person flattens it (close behind to prevent tape problems). Straight-aways are done last; just start at the end of one half circle and connect a straight line across.
